Twitter: Sometimes “Boring” and “Dry” is Fine

Ask any social media consultant and they’ll tell you that Twitter needs to be conversational. To make the most out of Twitter, you shouldn’t be just broadcasting your messages – you should also be interacting with others, responding to their tweets, answering their questions, being helpful.

The best Twitter accounts are those that have a mix of broadcasting and interacting, and especially those that add the occasional personal tweet to the mix, making even a corporate account appear more human and more approachable.

They Didn’t Follow You Back? Chances Are, It’s Not Personal

The more I tweet, the more I realize that in the vast majority of cases, people no longer check each and every link in each email notification they receive about a new follower, to decide if they should follow back. I know I don’t! I used to do this in the past – I would go to each Twitter account who had followed me to see if we share the same interests. I even used to go visit people’s websites to make sure we were a good fit. Based on this research, I used to make my decision whether to follow them back or not.

Why It’s So Difficult To Get Twitter Followers

If you’re not a celebrity, getting people on Twitter to follow you back is notoriously difficult. This is especially true if you look as if you’re trying to sell something, so don’t. It’s funny, really, becuase we all try to sell something on Twitter – if not a product or a service, then we’re trying to sell ourselves, our ideas, our brand. When you use Twitter, please DON’T:

1. Create an account that doesn’t tweet except for asking people to follow you.

2. Create an account that doesn’t tweet except for a single tweet with your website URL.

3. Create a Twitter account with unreadable light font on light background that means no one can read your Twitter bio.

Twitter Reduces Spam to 1% of Tweets – NOT ENOUGH

Twitter has recently boasted on its blog that they have managed to seriously reduce Twitter spam and that spam now account for just 1% of all tweets.

While the supportive folks on Mashable were quick to join Twitter’s little celebration, pointing out that this figure is impressive since 90% of email is spam, I find it a little misleading. Perhaps 90% of email is spam, but – at least when I use Gmail – none of it reaches my Inbox. However, when I use Twitter, I still deal with spammers daily.
